"Supplication Beneath the Waves" is an arrangement of the German chorale Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ ("I Call to You, Lord Jesus Christ"), an intimate plea for mercy, guidance, and deliverance amid all the troubles and temptations of this earthly life. In the spirit of Saito, who postulated that the true essence of the divine was to be found in "the lower registers," this piece is built around a subtly wavering bass drone, together with the chilling ambience of waves calmly caressing the harbour shore. It is a tribute to all who, like Saito, have struggled end endured in the pursuit of their art.
